James was born 1 January 1817 in Sydney and baptised there the following month. He was apprenticed to shipbuilder George Green, and later married Alice Field, around 1854, in Melbourne. He died 15 July 1880 at Waterloo, Sydney.
James is the prosecutor of the family’s defining legal drama: in 1842 he was one of five siblings who sued their brother Robert over their father’s George Street property, and in 1851 he stood as prosecutor in the Supreme Court jury trial that put Robert’s whole legitimacy in question. The full story is told above, in Robert’s own account.
