Jean Mitchell was born on 2 March 1831 at Quarrytown, Glasgow, and baptised on 20 March, ‘their 6th child’.1 The Kate’s clerk wrote her down as Jane, eighteen, a house servant, and Jane she remained in her marriage notice.
She married Stephen Palmer on 17 August 1853 at her father’s house in Abercrombie Lane, Sydney, by the Rev. John Gibson — ‘Jane, fifth daughter of Mr. John Mitchell, formerly of Sauchiehall-street, Glasgow, practical engineer’.2 When she died, around 1881, her husband used her real name: the funeral of ‘his late beloved wife, Jean Mitchell’ left their home at 60 Shepherd Street, Shepherd’s Paddock, for the Necropolis at Rookwood.3
