Five Children at Dulwich Hill

Ethel Blanche Baldock

1880–1929

The ninth child — a waitress at the family home in 1903–04, before her marriage to a Dulwich Hill tram driver, five children, and a death at forty-nine remembered by four sisters and a brother in a Herald tribute two years on.

Born
1880 · registered Sydney
Died
17 November 1929 · Sydney, aged 49
Married
Alfred Adolphe Alexander Loise (1879–1954)
Trade
Waitress, before her marriage

Ethel Blanche was registered in the Sydney district in 1880.2 The 1903–04 Camperdown electoral roll finds her still at home, 38 Hordern Street, Newtown, working as a waitress.12 She joined five siblings in the shared In Memoriam notices for their mother in 1906, 1908 and 1914, and her father’s 1916 obituary names her among his surviving daughters as “Mrs Loise (Ethel).”1011 Her husband can now be named. On 2 March 1904, at St Stephen’s Church of England, Newtown, Ethel married Alfred Adolphe Alexander Loise, a twenty-four-year-old tram driver of Chippendale, born at Collingwood, Victoria, the only son of Adolphe Loise, an undertaker of Redfern. The Herald’s marriage notice called her “fifth daughter of Alfred Baldock” — counting, as the family evidently did, the two sisters who had died as infants along with those who lived.102

The couple settled at Dulwich Hill, where Alfred drove trams and Ethel bore five children in as many neighbouring streets: Francis Alexander Alfred (born 20 March 1905, baptised at Loftus Road), George Spencer (born 19 December 1906, baptised at Terris Road) and Elsie Helen (born 9 May 1909, baptised at Terrace Road) all at St Stephen’s, Newtown; then Nellie Harriett, and finally Alexander Henry, born 21 June 1919.103

Ethel died at Sydney on 17 November 1929, aged forty-nine. Two years later, her family marked the anniversary in the Herald’s In Memoriam column: “a beautiful memory left behind; a life that was upright, good, and kind,” inserted by “her loving sisters, Ada, Lillie, Maude, Violet; also Clarrie and Lucy” — Ada Ellen, Alice Lilla May, Maud Beatrice and Violet Isabel, with their brother Clarence, and a “Lucy” who is not Clarence’s wife — he had married Sarah A. Murcutt in 1914 — and remains otherwise untraced in this branch.104110 She was buried at Rookwood, on a headstone later shared with her husband.

Ethel and Alfred’s Children

Francis, George, Elsie, Nellie and Alexander

The five children born at Dulwich Hill between 1905 and 1919 — three traced only as far as their baptisms and marriages, two who lived into the twenty-first century.

Francis Alexander Alfred Loise

b. 1905

The eldest, baptised at St Stephen’s, Newtown, in April 1905. His later life has not yet been traced.103

George Spencer Loise

b. 1906

Warehouseman, then storeman

Living with his widowed father at Penshurst through the 1930s and at Como by the early 1940s, George did not marry until 1947, at forty, when he wed Muriel Elizabeth Major at Manly.105106

Elsie Helen Loise

1909–1967

Married Dennis Sanford Francis Barbour, a cook, at Darlinghurst in December 1940; the couple later lived at Bexley. She died in 1967 and was buried at Woronora Memorial Park.106

Nellie Harriett Loise

d. 2000

Married Sidney Francis Macwilliams in 1936; the couple lived at Penshurst and later Bexley. She died at Townsville in 2000.106

Alexander Henry Loise

1919–2005

Married Miriam Lucy Shepherd, a shoe machinist, at Parramatta in May 1942. He died at South West Rocks in 2005.106

A Second Marriage

Alfred Loise, After Ethel

Alfred remarried within a year of Ethel’s death, to Maria Henrietta Hauenstein, in 1930. By then he and George were sharing a house at Arcadia Street, Penshurst — Maria joins them there in the roll from 1934 — and the household had moved on to Georges River Crescent, Como, by 1943, Alfred still working as a clerk. He retired from the tramways to Gymea, where he died on 6 November 1954, aged seventy-five, and was buried beside Ethel, the headstone naming them both.105

Sydney street directories: “Baldock, Alfred, coachbuilder,” Cleveland Street, Darlington; and “37 Baldock, Alfred, coachbuilder,” Myrtle Street (south side) — both in the Camperdown/Darlington trades district adjoining Redfern, consistent with the Redfern-district births of Alice Lilla May (1875) and Maud Beatrice (1877) and Alice’s own marriage certificate, which gives her birthplace as Darlington.

    1903–04 Camperdown electoral roll

Commonwealth Electoral Roll (women), Division of Camperdown, 1903–1904, p. 3: Baldock, Ethel, 38 Hordern Street, Newtown, waitress; Baldock, Frances, 38 Hordern Street, Newtown, home duties; Baldock, Maud, 38 Hordern Street, Newtown, saleswoman. Also on the same page, at different addresses: Baldock, Mary, 7 O’Connell Street, domestic duties; Baldock, Sarah Elizabeth, 7 Albemarle Street, Newtown, domestic duties — relationship, if any, not yet established. The “Frances Baldock” of this entry is almost certainly the mother, Frances Elizabeth, still living at this same Hordern Street address until her death there in 1905 (ref. 9) — not her daughter Frances Louisa, who had already been dead for fifteen years by 1903 (ref. 16).

  13. 13

Marriage of Alice Lilla May Baldock, 1902

NSW Register of Marriages, District of [Sydney], 1902, entry No. 49: Henry Percival Healey, house decorator of Summer Hill, widower, born London, aged 43, father Stephen Healey, mother Selina Morey (both deceased), married Alice Lilla May Baldock, of Hordern Street, Newtown, spinster, born Darlington NSW, aged 27, father Alfred Baldock (coach builder), mother Frances Elizabeth Bawn; married 2 October 1902 at St Andrew’s Church, Summer Hill, according to the rites of the Church of England, by the Rev. John Vaughan; witnesses Alfred Baldock and William Baldock.

Bubonic plague case, 1902 — identified as the son, not the father

“Bubonic Plague — Three Additional Cases,” Sydney Morning Herald, 21 March 1902, p. 6: “The first case was that of Alfred Baldock, aged 38, a resident of Kensington-street, Kogarah, and employed at the printing establishment of J. Andrew and Co., Bridge-street.” The patriarch Alfred Baldock, born 1840, would have been about 62 in 1902; the age of 38 matches his eldest son, Alfred (b. 1863), who that same year witnessed his sister Alice’s marriage.

Birth and death of the first George, 1865–1866

NSW BDM birth registration 5325/1865, Bathurst — George [J.] Baldock, father Alfred, mother Frances E., born 4 January 1865. NSW BDM death registration 2997/1866, Bathurst — George J. Baldock, father Alfred, mother Frances E., died 15 February 1866, aged thirteen months. This resolves which of the two Baldock sons named George died young: it was the elder, not the George Frederick born in 1871.

  16. 16

Birth and death registrations of Frances Louisa Baldock

NSW BDM birth registration 6380/1869, Bathurst — Frances L. Baldock, father Alfred, mother Frances E. (cf. ref. 2), born 7 January 1869. NSW BDM death registration 11933/1888, Newcastle — Frances L. Baldock, died 22 February 1888, aged nineteen. She is buried at Sandgate Cemetery, Newcastle. A first-anniversary In Memoriam notice, to the day, appeared the following year: “BALDOCK.—In affectionate remembrance of our beloved eldest daughter, Francis Louisa, who died at Newcastle, February 22, 1888. Inserted by her loving parents, Alfred and Francis Elizabeth Baldock.” (Evening News, Sydney, 22 February 1889, p. 4, nla.gov.au/nla.news-article108792379 — the paper’s own typesetting has “Francis” throughout, evidently its own spelling rather than a different identity.)

  17. 17

Marriage of Mary Mahalia Allen to John Louis Williams, 1890

NSW BDM marriage registration 1930/1890: John Louis Williams, bachelor, butcher, of Towrang, married Mary Mahala Allen, spinster, of Goulburn, on 30 July 1890 at Towrang according to the rites of the Church of England; the bride being under twenty-one, the consent of her father, John Allen, was given in writing; witnesses Jonathan Williams and Alice Woods; officiating minister Albert Cornelius Mosley.

  18. 18

Marriage of Mary Mahalia Williams to George Frederick Baldock, 1894

NSW BDM marriage index, 1894, Taralga, registration 6777: “Mary M. Williams” (formerly Allen) to “George G. Baldock” — almost certainly a transcription of George Frederick, since every later birth registration of the couple’s children names the father as “George F. Baldock” and no other Baldock candidate fits the date or district.

  19. 19

Also May, the beloved wife of the above, died 28 March 1918.” The last digit of Fanny’s death year is worn away on the stone itself, but NSW BDM death registration 11354/1914, Burwood district, father George F., mother Mary M., confirms the date beyond doubt: Frances Elizabeth Baldock died 11 July 1914. Cemetery transcription, Rookwood General Cemetery, Section T, Row 28, Old Church of England: “dau of George & May Baldcock” [sic], with a small separate pedestal inscribed simply “Fanny.”

Family-history index (Ancestry) gives the children of the marriage as Francis John (1918), George Frederick (1919), Alfred William (1920) and Sylvia Joyce (1920) — the last two sharing a birth year in every version of the index consulted, an oddity this branch has not resolved.

The same page lists, at 22 King Street: Baldock, Evelynne May (home duties, entry 232) and Baldock, George Henry (storekeeper, entry 234) — no George Henry appears among George Frederick and Mary Mahalia’s own ten children (ref. 19), and George Gordon Baldock (below) is independently documented as single throughout this period, so this second Baldock couple is very likely unrelated, or connected some other way not yet traced.

Coroner’s inquest into the death of Eric Alexander Crow, 1926

NSW Register of Coronial Inquests, entry No. 1176, page 170: Crow, Eric Alexander, inquest held 3 August 1926 at Yass before H. R. Clark, J.P., date received 3 August [1926], age 27; born Yass, locality of death Yass (railway station); verdict, injuries accidentally received through being run over by a train; no post-mortem held. His age as given here — 27 — sits awkwardly against his own 1918 AIF attestation (ref. 38 above), which put his birth about 1893 and so his age at death nearer 33; a birth registration since found (ref. 122 below) supports the attestation over this register.

  122. 122

Birth registration of Eric Alexander Crow, 1894

NSW BDM birth registration 38626/1894, Yass district: Crow, Eric Alexander, mother’s given name Margaret. Consistent with his own 1918 AIF attestation (ref. 38 above), which implied a birth around 1893, rather than the age of 27 given in the 1926 coronial inquest register (ref. 121 above), which would imply a birth around 1899.

  123. 123

Marriage of James Whalan and Rose M. Navin, 1895

NSW BDM marriage registration 50/1895, Sydney district: James Whalan to Rose M. Navin, married 1895 — four years before Josephine Rose Whalan’s birth (ref. 37 above) and ten before Elizabeth Ann Whalan’s (ref. 59 below), and so almost certainly the marriage that produced both sisters, notwithstanding the “Margaret Rose Mevan” given for the same mother in Josephine’s own 1928 marriage register (ref. 36 above).

  124. 124

Electoral roll, Boulder, Western Australia, 1910

Electoral Roll, Division of Kalgoorlie, Subdivision of Boulder, 1910, entries 3363–3364: Whalan, James (miner) and Whalan, Rose Mary (home duties), both 96 Dwyer Street, Boulder.

  125. 125

Deaths of Rose Mary Whalan and an infant son, Boulder, 1911

Western Australian BDM death registrations, Boulder district, 1911: an unnamed male Whalan, not born alive, registration 700065, parents James Whalan and Rose Mary Neven (a further spelling of Navin); Rose Mary Whalan, aged 38, registration 700067, father Henry Neven, mother unknown. The two registrations, numbered two apart in the same district and year, are almost certainly connected — Rose Mary dying in or shortly after delivering a stillborn son — leaving James Whalan a widower in Boulder in 1911, with Elizabeth Ann not yet six years old and Josephine Rose about twelve.
