Emily Louisa was baptised, like her brother Frederick Henry, at St Philip’s, Sydney, in the same year he died. No marriage has ever been found for her, and none was needed to explain what came next: by 1886 she had left New South Wales for Victoria, where she had a daughter, Florence — the birth registration naming Emily Louisa Baldock as mother and leaving the father unknown.1 Florence lived only a matter of weeks, dying in Victoria in 1887 aged two months.2 Emily Louisa’s own later life and death remain untraced.
